The 1958 Cadillac accurately displays all of the newest design styles and the American public's aspirations of the year. Strong, powerful, aerodynamic, the car almost looks like a rocket ship. Many new features reflect the newest trend towards miniaturization, a technology that will prove critical later on in the "Space Race".

The year 1958 was all about Satellites and rocket-ships.
In October 1957 the United States awoke one morning to find that the Soviet Union had beaten it into space. With their launch of the sputnik satellite, the world's awareness of the strategic importance of space became almost instantly a national obsession. Everything reflected our new space age consciousness. Like the "streamlined" look of the 1930s, now cars, products, furniture even fashion displayed this new aerodynamic, rocket age, look.

What the US lacked in its space race it was able to more then compensate in its industrial design. Soon all America was enthralled with this look that set the stage for President Kennedy's famous speech announcing The US effort to land a man on the moon within a decade. Little did the world realize that that effort would create miniaturization and computers that ushered in the electronic-digital age that we enjoy today.
1958 saw the year that Elvis Presley was drafted into the Army. His popularity never diminished, rather it was strengthened as he performed his everyday duties like any other soldier.

In the1950s American car manufactures changed modern history. Cars designed with women's needs substantially helped create the suburban lifestyle. GM and the other major automobile manufactures begin to focus on the female driver. By hiring female designers and introducing features designed to make driving without a man more enjoyable and safe they Inadvertently helped create the suburbs and it car oriented lifestyle.
